Although our body naturally produces alpha-lipoic acid in small quantities, its production declines with aging. A food level found in spinach, broccoli, and yeast meat and organs (eg liver, kidney and heart), although the spinach is one of the foods high in cholesterol, we would have to eat about 3 , 2 pounds per day for just 1 mg alpha-lipoic acid so it is best to supplement it. All lipoic acid (LA) available as a supplement is synthesized chemically as it would require approximately 10 tonnes of waste from the liver to obtain 30mg of the acid. The R-(+)-lipoic acid (RLA) is available in nutritional supplements and nutrition and has been used clinically in various conditions and diseases.
