Carnitine and brain function:

The carnitine is an amino acid found in large quantities in meat, which derives its name. Its main action is energy production, efficiently transporting fatty acids from the cytoplasm to the mitochondria, where they burn and generate the energy needed to biological processes essential for our body.

In the form of acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) (which is the chemical addition of an acetyl group to the natural carnitine), not only fatty acids leads efficiently to mitochondria, but the available acetyl group, promotes the production of acetylcholine , one of the most important brain neurotransmitters and is considered the "messenger of memory."

The acetyl-L-carnitine also limits the production of free radicals, protecting brain cells and slows the decline in the levels of growth factors nerve tissue that occurs as a result of the aging process. It has been found in mice that acetyl-L-carnitine delay and even reverse the degeneration factor brain-derived neurotrophic (BDNF), to help rebuild the brain and nerve tissues.
